Chrome drops H.264 support
Here is why I think this decision is very premature:
- VP8’s lack of B frames, make it similar to the H.264 baseline profile. This is normally used in mobile phones due to their limited processing capability, and greatly decreases compression ability.
- There currently are very few hardware decoders. None so far have made it into any mobile devices.
- H.264 is an industry standard. If anything the spec is too verbose.
- Technical analysis of the VP8 codec vs H.264: http://x264dev.multimedia.cx/archives/377
- The spec is horribly written and extremely vague.
Here is why the decision makes sense:
- It is royalty free, for now.
Summary: Google dropped support for an industry standard codec for one that is far less technically capable with very little industry support, however, there are no current patent issues. Very, very risky move if you ask me. Only time will tell if this was the right one.

Conversation with Dad
- Me: Hey listen to this dubstep track...
- Song: (eery ambient samples)... (forgotten movie samples about technology or the end of the world)... WAA-WAA-WOMP-WOMP-WOMP
- Dad: I'm picturing giant robots with huge laser destroying cities and I like it.

Boreta
Boreta is a side project of Justin Boreta’s (member of the Glitch Mob). His music comes out the Los Angeles glitch/dubstep scene which is actually making some headway at the moment. A more proper classification I believe is hip-glitch or glitch-hop (the mashing up of hip-hop and glitch). The style is much different from what I like to call the more “proper” UK glitch and dubstep artists who prefer cleaner wobbles and samples. Us Yankees seem to always want to take everything to the extreme, and I kind of like it. We are like the friend who takes your genius idea and puts their little twist on it, then claim they invented the sound. As the old quote goes, “Good artists borrow, great artists steal.” Turn this one up!

L-Wiz
L-Wiz is a long time favorite of mine. They are a duo from Sweden producing simple yet hypnotic dubstep. The first song I ever heard from them, was “Girl from Codeine City” on FabricLive.37 mixed by Caspa & Rusko and was immediately struck by the fantastic saxophone sample. Best listening environment: late at night when you just want to relax and have deep conversations. This is music you definitely want to have a comfortable couch nearby for. Be sure to also listen to First Step.

Pretty Lights
I actually just found out about this duo from Colorado yesterday and already think they are amazing. Their sound ranges from breaks to DnB to dubstep. It’s the kind of music you put on Friday after work while you enjoy the sun and have a nice cold beer (which doesn’t happen that often in San Francisco). I like to call it relaxing energy. The nice thing is that you can also drop this at any party have instantly have people dance to it. It’s music that makes whatever you are doing seem that much better. Enjoy.
